Why You Should Start Jiu-Jitsu in the New Year

Hello.

When the new year comes, everyone sets new goals.

Deciding to start working out is one of them.

But why jiu-jitsu, of all things?

As you train jiu-jitsu, at some point you’ll encounter this feeling.

Day by day, stacking small steps,

you realize you’re getting stronger—slowly, but surely.

Jiu-jitsu isn’t the kind of workout where results show up right away.

It takes time to learn even a single technique,

and in the beginning, things don’t go your way and you lose often.

But in that process, you naturally come to understand.

How much practice and effort it takes

to win and control an opponent,

and how to accept defeat and the tap,

then get back up again.

Some days jiu-jitsu feels like it’s clicking unusually well,

and other days you spend the whole session just tapping out.

After rolling around all day,

you might start to wonder,

“When will I get stronger?”

“When will I get good?”

and those thoughts can creep in.

Especially because jiu-jitsu is a relative sport,

no matter how long you’ve trained,

in front of someone better, you can become a beginner again at any time.

That’s why in jiu-jitsu,

rather than comparing yourself to others,

it’s more important to compare yourself to who you were yesterday.

As you build your grit day by day,

there will come a moment when a clear level-up arrives.

After 3–4 months, your first stripe.

This is the moment you’ve just taken

that first step—the hardest and most difficult one.

There’s actually no such thing as the perfect time

to start jiu-jitsu.

Kids and adults are always busy,

and the moment when your body and mind are perfectly ready doesn’t come easily.

So what matters is

not when you start,

but whether you start at all.

If you start even one day earlier,

you build that much more experience ahead of time.

Even if the same amount of time passes,

someone is falling on the mat, learning,

and practicing how to get back up,

while someone else is still only thinking about it.

Jiu-jitsu isn’t a sport where you get ahead of others.

It’s a sport where you quietly repeat

the process of becoming a little better than you were yesterday.

You don’t have to be good from the start.

More important than the result is what you learn in the process—

the experience and the enjoyment.

You’ll learn how not to give up,

how to challenge yourself again,

and you’ll feel in your body that with effort, you can change.

Rather than waiting for perfect timing,

take your first step into Let’s Roll Jiu-Jitsu even one day sooner.

That is the best way

to start jiu-jitsu.
